HUAHINE PRICING NOTE: TAHITI SUN TRAVEL doesn't list specific prices of rooms for it's LISTINGS simply because they are subject to too many changes! We would rarely be able to claim accuracy, and would constantly be updating and changing prices according to the economy fluctuations of French Polynesia.

The hotels who have their own INTERLINKING WEBSITES are responsible for their own priceing updates and take care of that business themselves. As time goes by and more Hotels, Pensions and lodgings develop and interlink their own websites, up-to-date and accurate pricing can become a more exact science.

For now, we offer the following pricing structure as a ROUGH GUIDE for you to help plan your vacation budget on Huahine.

TOP END-
From $125.00- 400.00+/night
MID-RANGE-
From $51.00- 125.00/ night
BUDGET / CAMPING-
From $12.00 (camping)- 50.00/night

Prices given in US DOLLARS. For dollars to CFP conversion info, see www.papeete.com/tips.html#exchange

Mid-Range
(SMALL HOTELS, MOTELS, & FAMILY RUN PENSIONS)

These accomodations vary greatly throughout Tahiti- Polynesia. Some are quite luxurious, although slightly less so than the top of the line resorts listed above. Many are also not so luxurious, but what you'll save in dollars may end up being a worthy tradeoff. They range from various 2 and 3 star hotels and motels to what the French Polynesians call "Pensions" which are basically family run operations, often with family style service.

Since the majority of places to stay on all the Tahitian islands consist of these mid-range style accomodations, you might imagine there is also a great variation in quality, service, and facilities...

BUDGET / CAMPING
(Pensions, small hotels, and lodging in private homes)

Listed below are refuges for those of you on a tight budget or wishing to save your hard earned money on various activities or Island hopping rather than on lodging.

Amenities can be a bit stark compared to some other more expensive places to stay on the island, but just because it's budget doesn't mean it isn't a great place to stay. Backpackers, students, long term travelers, or campers love these places... Accomodations are often simple bungalows, dorm style cottages or rooms utilizing communal style bathrooms, kitchens, and showers.

Camping areas all share the use of above mentioned amenities, unless you're really into roughing it, in which case you won't be staying at these areas anyway. (See our camping notes below.)

In our humble opinion, many of these budget accomodations are among the BEST places to stay on ALL the islands of Tahititi Polynesia due to their "family touch." They are the easiest places to have personal contact and interact with the islanders, which most people will find extremely rewarding.

Most, if not all the accomodations, are run by family members and they are often very friendly, outgoing, and interesting to meet for any traveler. Great sources of Island information, these locals also can help you organize the many island activities and sights you will be pursuing while on Huahine.

CAMPING ON HUAHINE

Camping on Huahine is limited, but there are a bit more choices here than on many of the other Society Islands:

1) You can try this place:

VAIARU FAMILY CAMPGROUND & KIDS SUMMER CAMP
Polynesian Contact: Louise Temaiana, Haapu - HUAHINE, Telephone (689) 68.84.01 or US contact: Denise Fugate at (503) 818-5357 Vaiaru Campground is located on a lagoon beach next to the owner's working vanilla plantation. Vaiaru is a "magical" place. An ancient "marae" (religious site) is located nearby. The camp abounds with lush, tropical fruit and palm trees. Many services and activities are offered for your enjoyment. You may immerse yourself in the old Tahitian ways, learn crafts (pit cooking, weaving, etc.) and eat at a traditional feast. Snorkeling, fishing, hiking, island tours and other activities can also be arranged. A complete kitchen is located at the site, or take advantage of the meal plans offered by your host family. Complete camping packages and transfers from dock or airport are available. Language: English, French and Tahitian are spoken. Your Host Family: Mumu was born and raised on Huahine, and is well-versed in the traditional Tahitian ways. Louise was born in Canada and moved to Huahine in 1991. Their family will make your stay at Vaiaru an experience to remember.

2) Or you can try any of the 5 campgrounds listed above that are located on Pension property and pitch your tent on their grounds. (Look for the letters GC). Although not really remote "camping" in the true sense of the word, you'll be able to live out of your tent and definately be able to save money this way. Use the communal kitchen, bathroom facilities, and store your valuables with the management, just as if you'd be paying for a room... The camping rates are the lowest of the rock bottom pricing choices for any place to stay on Huahine.

3) The third choice is to go deep... This is where
the adventurous and rugged backpacker types will inevitably seek hidden spots along the shorelines of the lagoon or quiet places in the interior to rest for the nights... Be aware that the locals won't encourage this because MOST OF THE SHORE ACREAGE IS PRIVATE PROPERTY, but if you must: Take heed and give respect when confronting a property owner, and definately, NO garbage and NO fires. Good ideas for campers: Bring your own tent and get permission from any landowners you happen to pitch your tent on their property BEFORE you do it...

Note: If anybody finds out any other good places to camp on Huahine, please email us with the details and we'll share the knowledge here for future campers.
